Which Berlin roles work in English
Berlin's reputation as an English-speaking city comes from its tech scene. The numbers bear that out — for some jobs. In Berlin, 31% of software engineering postings are English-friendly and only 6% require German. In sales it's the other way round: 80% require German.

Many engineering and design ads in Berlin don't mention language at all. That usually means the team works in English, but it's worth confirming in the first conversation. Customer-facing roles are different: if you'd be talking to German customers, expect German to be required even when the ad is in English.
What to check in a Berlin job ad
- Who the role serves. “DACH”, “German market”, German-speaking customers → German required, whatever language the ad is in.
- The language line under requirements. “Fluent in English and German” means C1 German. “German is a plus” means optional. Our decoder covers the rest.
- The location line. Many Berlin companies also list “remote (Germany)” or hybrid options — worth including in your search.
